Pressure Cleaning Your Darwin Driveway: A Practical Guide

Darwin driveways cop a beating from red dirt, monsoon stains, and mould — here's how to pressure clean yours properly and how often to do it.

If you live in Karama, Leanyer, or anywhere else in Darwin's northern suburbs, your driveway probably looks like it's been through a mud wrestling competition by the end of every wet season. Red dirt, algae, tyre marks, mould creeping in from the edges — concrete and pavers take a beating up here in a way that just doesn't happen in Melbourne or Sydney. Pressure cleaning is the single most effective way to reset your driveway back to something you're not embarrassed about.

Why Darwin Driveways Get So Dirty, So Fast

The combination of monsoonal rain (November to April), extreme humidity running at 85–95%, and the NT's famous red laterite dirt creates a perfect storm for driveway grime. Water carries dirt and organic matter across your concrete, and the heat and moisture lock it in fast. Algae and mould spores don't need long to take hold — a couple of weeks of wet weather is all it takes for green-black staining to start spreading from your lawn edges inward.

Coastal areas add another layer. Properties in Nightcliff, Coconut Grove, and Larrakeyah deal with salt-laden air that bonds with wet dirt and creates a crusty residue that's much harder to shift than ordinary grime. If you've ever pressure cleaned a beachside driveway and noticed it took twice as long as your mate's place in Casuarina, that's why.

Then there's the dry season: red dust blown in from bare ground during the build-up, tracked across your driveway by vehicles and foot traffic, baking hard into every pore of the concrete under 34°C heat. By October, a driveway that looked clean in May can be uniformly rust-red.

What Pressure You Actually Need

This is where a lot of DIY jobs go wrong. Standard garden hose attachments that claim to be "pressure washers" typically run at 500–800 PSI. For a Darwin driveway, you want at least 2500–3000 PSI for concrete, and 1800–2000 PSI for pavers or exposed aggregate (anything higher risks blasting out the jointing sand or cracking softer aggregate).

Nozzle choice matters just as much as pressure. A 25-degree fan nozzle is your workhorse for general cleaning. A rotating turbo nozzle covers more ground faster and is excellent for heavy staining, but go easy on older or pitted concrete — it can etch the surface if you hover too long in one spot. Never use a 0-degree nozzle on driveways; it's for stripping rust off metal, not cleaning paving.

Surface cleaner attachments

If you're doing a full driveway rather than spot-cleaning, a flat surface cleaner attachment is worth the hire cost. It contains the spray in a spinning disc, gives you consistent, streak-free coverage, and cuts cleaning time by around 40%. Most hire shops in Darwin stock them for $20–$30 a day on top of the pressure washer hire.

Pre-Treatment for Stubborn Mould and Algae

For concrete that's more green than grey, pressure washing alone won't get the job done — you need to kill the mould before you wash it away, otherwise you're just redistributing spores. Apply a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a purpose-made concrete mould killer, let it dwell for 10–15 minutes, then pressure wash from high to low.

For oil stains from vehicles — common on older Darwin homes with unsealed carports — use a degreaser designed for concrete. Spray on, scrub with a stiff brush, leave for 5–10 minutes, then hit it with high pressure. You may need two passes on old, set-in stains. Accept that some stains are genuinely permanent once they've been there for years; you can reduce them but rarely eliminate them completely.

How Often Should You Clean Your Darwin Driveway?

At minimum, once a year — and if you do it once, do it at the end of the wet season (April–May) when all the wet-season grime has accumulated. That's the highest-impact timing. If you want a cleaner-looking property year-round, a second clean in October before the build-up starts is worth it — it removes the dry-season dust accumulation and gives you a fresh start going into the wet.

Properties with large shade trees overhanging the driveway (common in Parap and Stuart Park where older Darwin gardens have big mango and frangipani trees) may need more frequent attention. Organic matter from leaf drop accelerates mould growth significantly.

Rental properties and anything going to market benefit from a clean regardless of season — a pressure-cleaned driveway is one of the cheapest ways to lift street appeal before photos or inspections.

DIY vs Professional Pressure Cleaning

Hiring a pressure washer yourself runs about $80–$120 for a half-day from most Darwin equipment hire shops, plus your time — usually 2–4 hours for a standard double driveway. If you've done it before and have the right technique, it's perfectly achievable.

Professional pressure cleaning typically costs $200–$400 for a driveway depending on size, condition, and whether pre-treatment is included. Professionals bring commercial-grade machines (often 4000+ PSI), surface cleaners as standard, and know how to handle problem surfaces like exposed aggregate or coloured concrete without damaging them. For large properties, multi-surface jobs (driveway plus paths, pool surrounds, fences), or where mould is severe, the professional route saves time and usually gets a better result on difficult staining.
