Fencing & Fence Repairs Darwin

Colorbond, timber, pool and rural fencing — built for cyclone country

Need a Fence Built or Repaired?

Free on-site quote across Darwin and Palmerston

A fence in Darwin has a harder job than a fence anywhere else in Australia. It has to stand up in cyclone wind region C, survive a monsoon season that drops more than 1,700 mm of rain, resist some of the highest termite pressure in the country, and take UV exposure that fades and chalks coatings years faster than it would down south. Most of the failed fences we are called out to did not fail because of the panels. They failed at the footings.

AusMCo builds, repairs and replaces fencing across Darwin, Palmerston and the rural area. We quote on site, specify footings and post spacing for the actual wind region rather than a generic catalogue detail, and handle the old fence removal and disposal as part of the job. Why Darwin Fences Fail

Footings Built to the Wrong Wind Region

Darwin sits in cyclone wind region C. A fence specified for the eastern seaboard has footings too shallow and posts too far apart for the loads it will see here. The panels stay perfect and the whole run leans over at the first serious blow. This is the single most common fault we find, and it is almost always in fences installed cheaply and quickly.

Termites in Timber Posts

Darwin has some of the highest termite activity in Australia. A timber fence post in ground contact needs the right treatment level for in-ground use — anything less is a food source with a fence attached. Where a client wants the look of timber in a high-pressure area we will usually recommend steel posts with timber infill, which lasts dramatically longer.

Wet Season Ground Movement

Reactive soils swell through the wet and shrink through the dry. Over a few cycles that movement works a shallow footing loose and the fence line goes wavy. Correct footing depth and diameter is what resists it. Fences along a drainage line or at the bottom of a slope need more again, because water is moving past the footing every storm.

Corrosion in Coastal Suburbs

Nightcliff, Rapid Creek, Fannie Bay and Larrakeyah carry real salt load. Standard fixings rust out and stain the panels long before the fence is worn out. Stainless or correctly rated fixings and the right Colorbond coating grade cost a little more up front and save the whole fence.

Gates Treated as an Afterthought

A gate is the moving part, so it is the part that fails. Undersized hinges, no diagonal bracing and posts no deeper than the fence posts give you a gate that drags within a year. Pool gates are worse, because a dropped pool gate is a safety problem rather than an annoyance.

Boundary Fences & Your Neighbour

A dividing fence between two properties in the Northern Territory is generally a shared cost between the two owners, and there is a formal notice process if you cannot reach agreement. In practice the jobs that go smoothly are the ones where the conversation happened first.

Talk to the neighbour before you book anything. Agree the fence type, the height and the line.

Get the agreement in writing, even if it is only an exchanged text message confirming the split.

Ask us to quote in a form you can hand over. We will itemise it so both parties can see exactly what they are paying for.

Be careful with the fence line itself. If there is any doubt where the boundary runs, a surveyor is far cheaper than moving a built fence.

This is general information, not legal advice. For a dispute, NT Consumer Affairs and the Community Justice Centre are the right starting points.

Pool Fencing & Compliance

Pool fencing in the Northern Territory is regulated. A pool barrier has to meet the safety standard, gates must be self-closing and self-latching, and there are rules about what can be climbed from the outside — which is why a pot plant or a pool pump next to the fence can turn a compliant barrier into a non-compliant one.

We repair pool fencing, replace failed gate hardware and panels, and fix the climbable-object problems that come up at inspection time. What we will not do is tell you a job is compliant when that is a certifier's call. If your work needs certification we say so and point you to the right person. Being straight about where our scope ends is the whole point.

How AusMCo Works

We quote on site, not over the phone. Post hole conditions, access for a machine, slope and what is already in the ground decide the price. A phone quote on a fence is a guess.

We specify for region C. Footing depth, post spacing and fixings are set for Darwin's wind loads, and we will tell you where we have gone beyond the minimum and why.

We coordinate licensed trades where a job needs them. AusMCo coordinates a network of licensed Darwin trades, so if your fence job runs into electrical — a gate motor, a sensor light, a cable in the footing line — the licensed work is done by the right licensed person.

We work to the season. Dry season for planned installs, and we still turn out in the wet for storm damage and make-safe.

We document for insurance. Storm damage jobs get photographed and written up in a form an insurer will accept.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a new fence cost in Darwin?

As a guide, Colorbond runs roughly $120–$180 per metre supplied and installed, treated pine paling around $100–$150 per metre, and glass pool fencing $350–$600 per metre. Site access, post hole conditions, removal of the old fence and ground slope all move the number. We quote per job after looking at the site. Our full breakdown is in our Darwin fence cost guide .

Who pays for a shared boundary fence?

In the Northern Territory a dividing fence between two properties is generally a shared cost between the two owners, and there is a formal notice process if you cannot agree. Get the agreement in writing before work starts — it prevents the most common dispute we see. We are happy to quote in a form you can give your neighbour.

Do fences in Darwin need to be built differently?

Yes. Darwin is in cyclone wind region C, so a fence here needs deeper footings and closer post spacing than the same fence in Adelaide or Brisbane. Colorbond panels need the correct rail count and fixing pattern for the wind rating. A fence built to southern specifications is the one that ends up on the ground in February.

Can you repair a pool fence, or does it need replacing?

Often repair is enough — a dropped gate, a failed self-closing hinge, a loose panel. But pool fencing in the NT is regulated and has to meet the safety standard, including gate self-closing and self-latching. If your repair touches compliance we will tell you plainly and point you to a certifier rather than guess.

What is the best time of year to install a fence in Darwin?

The dry season, May to September, is ideal — post holes stay open, concrete cures predictably and access is easy. Wet season installs are possible but post holes fill with water and heavy machinery can bog on soft ground, which adds time and cost. If your fence came down in a storm we will still come out in the wet.

How long does a fence take?

A typical residential boundary run is two to three days: one day to remove the old fence and set posts, then a return visit once the concrete has gone off to hang panels or palings. Larger rural runs and anything needing rock drilling take longer. We give you a specific timeframe with the quote.

Do you remove and dispose of the old fence?

Yes, and it is included in the quote unless you ask us to leave it. Old treated pine and fibro-era fencing needs correct disposal — if we suspect asbestos in an old fence sheet we stop and arrange proper testing and removal rather than breaking it up.
